Start with the official map
Open the Icelandic Meteorological Office aurora forecast. This guide explains how to read it; it is not a live forecast feed. A screenshot saved earlier in the day can describe a different hour, so return to the source and check the selected date and time.
On the cloud-cover map, green indicates cloud and white indicates clearer sky. Those colours do not show where the aurora is currently visible. Start with your evening’s time window, then look at the cloud layers and the area relevant to your outing. The map’s Reykjavík sunrise, sunset and darkness information helps you avoid confusing sunset with full darkness.
A useful reading order
| Step | What to examine | What it answers |
|---|
| 1 | Date and time selection | Am I looking at the right evening? |
| 2 | Darkness information | Is there a usable dark period? |
| 3 | Cloud cover and layers | Are there possible gaps overhead? |
| 4 | Aurora activity forecast | What activity level is forecast? |
| 5 | Operator message | Is my particular departure operating? |
The published activity scale runs from zero to nine. It is not a percentage chance of seeing lights. Avoid turning a single number into a yes-or-no booking rule: cloud can block the view, and the sky changes over the course of the evening.
Why the city forecast is only a starting point
A land tour may drive beyond Reykjavík, while a cruise has its own operating area and marine conditions. A cloudy patch over your hotel does not establish what the operator will find elsewhere. Equally, a white area on the map does not tell you whether the route to it is practical or safe.
Use the forecast to understand the provider’s decision, not to demand a route from a map. Read where tours go for why an aurora excursion usually avoids promising a fixed viewing stop. Your guide also has to consider access, timing and the group’s return.
What to do with a doubtful forecast
Read your customer-cancellation deadline before deciding to withdraw. Your own interpretation of the map does not cancel the booking. If the provider calls the evening off, follow their message about rebooking or refund arrangements. If it runs and you see no lights, the product’s no-sighting terms apply instead.
Keep a backup indoor plan, such as Aurora Reykjavík, without treating it as equivalent to an outdoor sighting. Do not buy multiple overlapping tours because several apps disagree. First clarify what your existing provider is doing and whether you have a repeat-trip option.
Avoid false precision
This site does not publish a success percentage, an AI prediction or a live green-light badge. The useful action is to check the official source close to departure and keep your provider’s communication available. For choosing a travel month rather than tonight’s outing, use the separate best-time guide.
